For Students
Considering Law School — or Rural Legal Practice?
At Harvest Legal, we regularly meet with high school students, college students and law students
who are curious about the legal profession or interested in what a career in rural Kansas law can look like.
You don’t need to have your path figured out.
You don’t need a resume just to ask questions.
If you’re curious, we’re happy to talk.
We Welcome Conversations at Every Stage
Students reach out to us for all kinds of reasons, including:
“I’m thinking about law school. Is it worth it?”
“What does practicing law in a small town actually look like?”
“Can you have a meaningful legal career without moving to a big city?”
“What kinds of law do rural attorneys really practice?”
We enjoy those conversations, and we make time for them.
Job Shadowing & Observational Opportunities
We offer job-shadowing and observational opportunities for students who want to see what day-to-day legal work looks like in a rural setting. We also love connecting students with information about the Legal Education Accelerated Degree (LEAD) Program at KU and the Law School Early Admissions (LEAP) Program at Washburn.
This might include:
Sitting in on meetings (when appropriate)
Observing court or office work
Talking through what a typical day actually involves
Asking candid questions about the profession
These opportunities are available to:
High school students
College and Pre-Law students
College graduates who are considering a career change to the legal field
Internships, Early Career Opportunities & Law Students
We regularly connect with students at University of Kansas School of Law, Washburn University School of Law, University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law, and more. You might be interested in reaching out if you are a:
Law student exploring internships
Student considering rural practice after graduation
New attorney interested in building a long-term career in Kansas
We don’t believe great people only show up when there’s a formal posting.
If you’re interested in rural legal practice, we want to hear from you — even if we’re not advertising a specific position.
Always Open. Always Interested.
It’s important to say this plainly:
We are always open to meeting motivated students and early-career lawyers who are interested in practicing law in rural Kansas.
That might look like:
An informal conversation
A job shadow
An internship
A future role that hasn’t been created yet
Many of the best professional relationships start with a simple conversation.
Why We Care About Rural Legal Practice
We believe rural communities need:
Accessible legal services
Attorneys who understand local realities
A new generation of lawyers who know they don’t have to leave home to build a meaningful career
We’re proud to be “Rural By Choice,” and we believe students deserve to know that rural law is not a fall-back — it’s a calling.
Our goal is not just to hire, but to encourage, mentor, and advocate for the future of legal practice in rural Kansas.
You Don’t Have to Have It All Figured Out
If you’re:
Curious about law but unsure it’s for you
Interested in law school but intimidated by the process
Drawn to small towns, community-based work, or rural life
Wondering whether rural practice is “real” law
You’re exactly the kind of person we’re happy to talk with.
