Get to know us.

At Harvest Legal, we believe strong legal services and strong communities go hand in hand. Our team lives and works in rural Kansas, and we’re committed to serving individuals, families, businesses, churches, and nonprofits in the places we call home.

We also believe in the future of rural law. That’s why we intentionally invest in students and law clerks — offering mentorship, hands-on experience, and a realistic picture of what meaningful legal practice in a rural community can look like.

Chris Ambrose, Attorney

Chris is our founding attorney. He was raised in small towns and rural areas, and — after graduating from law school at the University of Missouri-Kansas City — Chris started his practice in Emporia. Read more about Chris.

Kary Johnson, Legal Assistant

Kary is our legal assistant and has more than 18 years of experience working in a law office. She enjoys the variety of her work and the fact that no two days are the same. Outside the office, Kary enjoys spending time with family and friends, walking her two dogs, and camping.

Malachai Smith, Law Clerk

Malachai has worked as a law clerk at Harvest Legal since 2022. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and now attends law school. Malachai enjoys helping others and learning how the legal system functions in real, day-to-day practice. He is a native Spanish speaker. Outside of work, he enjoys reading, eating, writing, playing console games, spending time with family, playing board games with friends, playing sports, working out, and more eating.

Julia Hintz, Law Clerk

Julia has worked as a law clerk at Harvest Legal since 2024. She holds bachelor’s degrees in Spanish Language and Literature, and in Digital Marketing Communications, Public Relations and Advertising from the University of Kansas. Julia now attends law school and anticipates graduating in May 2027. She enjoys legal research and writing and has a particular interest in researching legislation and its impact. Julia has a strong affinity for rural practice and hopes to continue serving her home community as an attorney. Outside the office, she enjoys reading Russian literature, spending time with friends, and playing piano.

Marketing PR for Kansas Attorney Lawyer Legal Services

Jacque Ambrose, Marketing & Public Relations

Jacque has been part of Harvest Legal since its beginning in 2013. She oversees marketing, communications, and the firm’s online presence, helping the community get to know the people behind the practice. Jacque has guided the firm through growth, change, and the challenges of the pandemic while maintaining a focus on creativity and connection. She doesn’t have any spare time because she has a busy husband and homeschools a lot of kids, but she enjoys hiking with the family, going on the occasional date night, serving at church, and re-reading the same pages of whatever book she’s trying to finish.
